Self-Rejected Concept Art for an album cover by H.L. Goyer for The Ludvico Treatment

I was thinking about how as artists we tend to share mostly what we like best, and probably never our own “rejection” pile. I decided that I would take one of my rejected concepts and see it through to the end as an experiment and share it. For me the result is the same, I still am not fond of it.

The goal here was simple, create something that would be engaging enough to the viewer to check out the music and match the tone word given to me by the band. It also had to match the overall feel of the music from the demo tracks I was handed.

Overall the tracks were more accessible than some of their earlier offerings (from the general public) and that made me think of butterflies. In the end I realized this concept I had come up with was entrenched with my own suspicions about the music industry and was too personal to me and not enough about the lyrical content on the tracks playing in my ears.

Anyways check out their music, it is quite good. Their upcoming release is a drastic shift from what you’ll hear on there pre-release though, so be sure to come back when the actual album is out. Don’t worry, you know I’ll be posting the successful cover to remind you…

This is not even remotely recent, but I completely forgot about it and just found it the other day in a long lost folder sitting on an old backup drive.

If you are looking at the dirty mucky stuff to the left, I think that’s a portion of the glacier but I cannot remember where during the hike this was taken.

This is meant to be a 6 foot wide print, to be observed in medium-dim light and was designed to make you feel utterly hopeless, if not meaningless in the scope of the universe.

On the one hand, I hope I fail at making you feel this way. On the other, if I succeed it means I am starting to scratch the surface of abstract art.

Quick Garuda and Tengu masks, paper mache

Masks my partner and I made for my brothers birthday dinner at a Japanese restaurant. His birthday is on Halloween so costumes are a thing.

These had to be rushed to finish and the all important step of sanding the dried masks had to be skipped, hence the citrus peel look to the surface of the painted masks.

The Tengu mask (big nose) was going to have a separate movable jaw on a simple hinge that would attach to my jaw and move when I talk (or unleash a spirit howl to protect the forest I am the warden of), but alas it was unfinished or go with no costume at all.

Another reblog of some of my work from the Calgary Digital Artists group. This is concept art for a comic I have been working on for far too long and am now just starting to work on the actual art. You can see a faint outline of where a spaceship will eventually be if I ever find someone to work on this with that enjoys drawing the same thing over and over in different positions and scenarios… I am not that person sadly, so it may never get further than a bunch of concept art.

In this scene you have the ship taking off, casting a bright light into the sky and illuminating it due to dense low hanging clouds.

You may notice again from the title that this entire comic is a Carl Sagan tribute of sorts.

This is just me showing someone how easy it is to cut things out with the lasso tool in photoshop, rendering the pen tool somewhat useless in my opinion save for instances where you need precise and accuratesymmetrical paths.Almost any other scenario and I can do it faster and better with the lasso. This kind of thing doesn’t even require a tablet!

Anyhow they disagreed originally but this took me about 4 minutes and is more accurate than their 20 minute pen-tool efforts so I converted someone finally to doing things by hand, even in photoshop. (This does not ring true in illustrator however, but that was not the topic…)

Also I actually just like how this looks with the cats cut out.

I am working on a stone pendant, and this is the start of it. 100% hand crafted, though I am using Hole Saw bits made to fit on a power drill, I am still using them by hand without a drill.

I no longer have a power drill, so my hands and arms are my new drill. Not that I would use a power drill on stone anyhow, as that would get ridiculously hot and be incredibly dusty. Doing it slowly by hand is still dusty but I actually want that you see…

Pipestone is not only an excellent stone to use in sculpture but is also a natural pigment. Native North Americans traditionally used both the stone for sculpture and the dust for pigment in their own paints.

I am doing the exact same thing now, despite that it would have taken me 1 minute with power tools which so far has taken an hour and a half. Just slowly grinding away… not using power tools however is key to being able to harvest as much stone dust as possible. If I was not so cramped for space I dare say I would not have lost a single grain, including all the paste-like substance you see in the first couple shots.

The final shot is a very rough and very loose depiction (photoshop) of what it will look like when all the pieces are cut out. It will also feature a different stone in the center, possibly a gemstone if I can procure one naturally. Molted feathers will tie it all together once the pieces are smoothly shaped and polished.

The darker background in the shot is the exact same stone, just wet. This will be closer to the finished colour once polished.

I have easily 2000+ photographs of just water. Probably triple...

My Dad

Never have I called him Father, it’s either Dad or Pops. He taught me all the most important lessons of my life; question everything especially authority, defend the weak and be accepting of everyone. Plus, he always put up with my crazy penchant or bringing cats home. From that first cat I found on some railway tracks when I was just a wee lad, he’s never turned away a cat whether I saved it from uncertain death or simply because it followed me home.

There is probably no way that my Dad and I will ever truly understand one another, but it does not matter. I don’t need to understand him to know that he is a good man and the most important one I will ever encounter during my travels on this tiny rock whizzing through the void of space. If it were not for him, I would most likely be dead right now. That is not an exaggeration, either.

I may not be a chip off the ol’ block, but that is because my Dad taught me how to build my own block instead of copying his. Though he was always a little disappointed I was not into sports (unless you count martial arts as a sport, which I do not) he always supported my other interests. If it were not for that, I never would have been able to build up my repertoire of skills and abilities. Heck, the career I hold is entirely due to him supporting my desire to learn “art on the computer”.

I love my Dad and one day aspire to not only be more like him, but to surpass him in greatness and help even more people than he did.

He is the best man I know, and the only role model I have ever considered worth emulating.
